Peanut Butter Smoothies

Peanut Butter Smoothies are a little unusual, a little decadent and more than a little sweet, but if you enjoy these ‘dessert’ type smoothies, the results are delicious. Most recipes ad more fluids such as Milk and some require a little ‘cooking’ over a heat source just to get the ingredients to melt and mix.

Always an interesting taste, but check the sweetness and adjust to your own palette…those with peanut allergies need to be warned, of course!

Peanut Butter and Health

There are many types of Peanut Butter, a paste made from ground and dry roasted peanuts, but if we consider one tablespoon full of the smooth, creamy type we would get a calorie value of about 95 which would be made up of 72% fat, 12% carbohydrates and 16% protein. That’s about 4 grams of good protein with about 8 grams of fat.

Peanut Butter is also a good source of dietary fiber but you have to monitor the salt content. Check the labels carefully because some types are very high in Sodium…and decide whether you want smooth, chunky or the real original where the oil separates from the paste!

It has a high level of resveratrol and monounsturated fats as well as B3 and E. Some have hydrogenated vegetable oils added to stop the paste separating from the oils but this in turn also adds a lot of trans fatty acids. This has brought up the question of Peanut Butter oil causing clogging of arteries and cholesterol problems.

The point here is to educate yourself about the peanut butter variations, check out the labels, and even possibly talk with your own medical adviser.

Obviously you will need to be very careful if you think anyone in your family has a peanut allergy!
